H4 to F1 Change of Status + Day 1 CPT
As an H4 dependent, your ability to work depends entirely on your spouse's H1B status. Changing to F1 with Day 1 CPT gives you independent work authorization — your own career, your own future.
Why H4 holders choose this pathway
H4 EAD cancelled or at risk
Your H4 EAD depends on your spouse's H1B and I-140 approval. If their status changes, so does yours.
No work authorization yet
You're on H4 without EAD and want to work. F1 + Day 1 CPT gives you full-time work authorization from day one.
Want a degree too
You want to build your own career with a US master's degree while working — not wait for an EAD.
Independence from spouse status
After changing to F1, your status is independent. You're not affected if your spouse's H1B situation changes.
H4 → F1 process overview
- 01
Verify H4 validity
Confirm your H4 I-94 is valid and there's no pending cap-gap or change in spouse's H1B. We check this on your free consult.
- 02
Apply to a Day 1 CPT university
Most of our partner universities accept H4 holders with flexible academic and English requirements. Admission can be fast (2–4 weeks).
- 03
Receive I-20 with CPT authorization
The university issues your F1 I-20 with Day 1 CPT pre-authorized in the curriculum. This is the key document for I-539.
- 04
File I-539 (H4 → F1)
File Form I-539 to change from H4 to F1. This is typically filed jointly or separately from your spouse's situation. Processing: 3–6 months.
- 05
Approval → Enroll → Work on Day 1 CPT
Once approved, you enroll and receive CPT. You're now on F1 with independent full-time work authorization. No EAD needed separately — CPT IS your authorization.
