How the Day 1 CPT Application Process Works
From your first question to your I-20 and I-539 — here's the full picture.

Eligibility check & consult

- 02Week 1–2
University application
- ✓ You submit your application to the chosen university (we assist with documents)
- ✓ Typical required documents: passport, prior degree transcripts, CV/resume, SOP, English proficiency scores (many are flexible)
- ✓ We follow up directly with admissions offices
- ✓ Admission decision typically within 2–4 weeks
- 03Week 3–6
I-20 issuance with CPT authorization
- ✓ University issues Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for F-1 Status)
- ✓ I-20 must explicitly include CPT work authorization from day one of enrollment
- ✓ We verify the I-20 for accuracy before you proceed
- ✓ Pay SEVIS fee ($350) after receiving I-20
- 04Week 6–8
File I-539 Change of Status
- ✓ File Form I-539 with USCIS (we guide you through every field)
- ✓ Include I-20, visa evidence, passport copies, I-94 printout, and any supporting documents
- ✓ USCIS filing fee: $370
- ✓ USCIS issues a receipt notice (I-797) confirming the application is pending
- ✓ You remain in the US legally and can continue working on your current status
- 05Months 1–6
USCIS processes I-539
- ✓ Standard processing time: 3–6 months
- ✓ No premium processing available for I-539
- ✓ Do not leave the US while I-539 is pending
- ✓ Continue working on your existing status (H1B, H4 EAD, etc.) while waiting
- ✓ USCIS may issue an RFE (Request for Evidence) — respond with our guidance within the deadline
- 06After approval
Enroll → Day 1 CPT
- ✓ Status changes to F-1 on approval date
- ✓ Enroll in your program at the partner university
- ✓ CPT work authorization is active from day one of enrollment
- ✓ Present I-20 (CPT-endorsed) to your employer — they update your I-9
- ✓ You're on F1 + Day 1 CPT. Keep working. Keep studying.
